Sixty members gathered in the lovely, prestigious setting of the Old Council Chambers in the Town Hall, Reigate for a two-hour long evening celebration.  Members, including many previous Chairman and committee members, were greeted with a glass of fizz and delicious canapés and given the opportunity to mingle, chat and share their memories.  On display were 5 large photo albums with photos and press cuttings detailing events over the first 20 years of the Arts Society Reigate.  The highlights were also projected as a PowerPoint presentation for all to see.

Former Chairman, Michael Beach then treated us all to an excellent talk, supported by great slides, on ‘The Reigate Trio’ detailing the lives of three well-known local artists.  It was wonderful to see some of the artwork of John Linnell, Samuel Palmer and William Tatten Winter.  We also learned something of their lives and why they settled in this area of Surrey….a most fascinating insight into these three artists.

Finally, we all had the chance for a little more fizz, nibbles and conversation before the event concluded at 8.00pm.  All-in-all it was a wonderful evening of reminiscences and a lovely opportunity for members to chat with others informally whilst celebrating our first forty years.

Please join Jill Day at the 10.30am service at St. Mary's Church, Reigate on Sunday 2nd February.  Jill will be presenting to the church the completed book of the church artefacts which she and the other volunteer church recorders have worked on for over 10 years.

Michael Beach has been involved with a project, in conjunction with the railways, to showcase local artists and artwork at stations in East Surrey.  Michael descibes the project here:

Railway stations (via Community Managers) are very enthusiastic about developing links locally. The Arts Society have taken this on board with a programme of showing local art at various stations - plus having the opportunity to publicise the work of The Arts Society.

In East Surrey we have sponsored two stations, Lingfield where we have just replaced the original artwork with some stunning displays by a local artist, Upper Warlingham with pictures from Reigate in the waiting room and display panels on the station windows (from which five new members have been recruited!) Shortly we will be sponsoring a stunning mural from the Reigate College of Art in the Redhill station tunnel.

Additionally Leatherhead have a changing display of art from local young people in the station waiting room, Dorking are awaiting a similar display in their station and Epsom are close to displaying young art in up to three local stations. Great opportunity for young artists to display their work and a great opportunity for the Arts Society to show its interest in art and its face to a wide and changing public.
