Our four star hotel, the Sprowston Manor Hotel and Country Club, is set in an idyllic countryside within a stately 16th century country manor located on the outskirts of Norwich where we will be staying for four nights on a half board basis. The tour (four nights / five days) will take place from 7th - 11th October 2019 and will cost £735 pp (sharing a twin room). A full programme of visits to Norwich and and other attractions in Norfolk has been arranged, including visits to East Ruston Old Vicarge Gardens, Aldeburgh, for a visit to The Red House, which was the home of Benjamin Britten, the Sandringham Estate, Blicking Hall as well as a guided tour of Norwich itself, the cathedral and the Sainsbury Centre for visual arts. 

We will also make the most of our journey to and from Norfolk by visiting the Gainsborough House en route to Norwich as well as Dedham Vale on our return to visit Flatford for a guided visit of the key sites which were the inspiration for Constable's paintings.

Saturday 17th October - Coach departs Reigate for Heathrow for our 14.55 British Airways flight arriving in Bologna at 18.00. Check in and dinner at a nearby restaurant. Sunday 18th October Sunday - A day in Bologna, a bustling provincial capital whose University celebrated its 900th anniversary in 1988. Guided stroll around the old heart of the city; the Piazza Maggiore with its fountains, towers, palaces & medieval city hall and a visit to the top-class National Picture Gallery. This boasts paintings by Bologna’s own School of artists, the 17th century Caracci brothers, and the beautiful Ecstasy of St Cecilia by Raphael. Monday 19th October - We drive to Ravenna, to visit the mid-5th century tomb of Galla Placidia, decorated with mosaics of the Good Shepherd, flowers and starry sky, and the church of St Vitale featuring the Emperor Justinian, the Empress (see picture) and their entourage. After time for lunch we continue to the 5th and 6th century mosaics in the basilica of St Apollinare Nuovo which feature a brightly coloured procession of martyrs. On the return journey, stop in Classe, Ravenna’s port and among the largest in the Roman Empire, to visit the great Basilica of St Apollinare. Dinner at a restaurant included. Tuesday 20th October - A day in Ferrara, the Renaissance home of the celebrated Este dynasty (1208-1598) who were major patrons of all the arts, commissioning wonderful architecture, sculpture & painting. We visit the Este Castle, Ferrara Cathedral & Picture Gallery and also see the Diamond and Schifanoia Palaces whose walls are covered with exquisite frescoes. Wednesday 21st October - Morning excursion to the International Ceramics Museum at Faenza, the town that gave its name to the brightly coloured, tin-glazed pottery or ‘faïence’ which was made there. This houses a fabulous collection of Italian Renaissance majolica, oriental ceramics and pieces by Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and the Vallauris school. Afternoon at leisure in Bologna. Dinner at the hotel. Thursday 22nd October - This morning our visit is to the 14th Cathedral of Bologna, San Petronio, to see its many works of art and then to the colourful central market, Mercato di Mezzo. After this the rest of the day is free until our transfer to Bologna airport at 17.30. Our return flight departs at 18.50, arriving Heathrow at 19.55 British time. The coach should reach Reigate by 21.30.

The tour will be based in Avignon. Itinerary * Day one: We will take the direct flight from Gatwick to Marseille. On arrival, transfer by coach under our tour manager’s direction to the Bristol Hotel in Avignon for a five night stay. Dinner, at the nearby Avignon Grand Hotel, included this evening. *Day two: This morning we will visit the Pont du Gard, a breath-taking Roman aqueduct which although over 2000 years old is wonderfully well-preserved. It is a remarkable symbol of Roman engineering capability and at 48 metres tall is the highest bridge they built. Next to Orange, home of two of the finest Roman monuments in Europe – the Theatre Antique d’Orange and the Arc de Triomphe, which was built to celebrate Caesar’s victory over the Gauls. Entrance to the theatre and museum are included. The old town is also worth exploring with its 17th century Hotel de Ville and peaceful, shady squares overlooked by terrace cafes. Finally, we will visit Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where you will enjoy a wine tasting. Meaning ‘new castle’, Chateauneuf was built in the 14th century by the Popes of Avignon, along with the vineyards that today produce one of the finest Cotes-du-Rhone wines. Dinner at leisure. * Day three: We depart in the morning to visit the former capital of the region, Aix-en-Provence. “The city of a thousand fountains” is still a cultural centre with the town’s most famous son being Paul Cezanne. He was born in Aix and loved his native region. Even when living in Paris he came back often for further inspiration. Cezanne lived and worked in Aix-en-Provence for a period of forty five years. The day will include a guided “Cezanne walk” incorporating a visit to his studio which is preserved as it was when he died in 1906. We will go on to visit the Bibemus Quarry which provided Cezanne with inspiration for the strange, ochre-coloured rock faces which he painted in his remarkable series of landscapes. We will also see Mont St Victoire which was one of his favourite subjects. He is known to have painted it over 60 times. Dinner at leisure. * Day four: This morning will be a guided walking highlights tour of Avignon, including entrance to the Calvet Museum which exhibits fine works of art from the 16th to 20th century, and holds innumerable collections donated or bequeathed by patrons, art lovers and collectors. The remainder of the day to enjoy the charming city at your own pace. Once home to Popes and one of France’s major artistic centres, Avignon is a beautiful and fascinating city. Its cultural importance is recognised by the old town being awarded Unesco World Heritage status. Surrounded by massive ramparts, the old town is dominated by the imposing Palais des Papes, headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church from 1309 to 1377. The Palais contains much to see including the Grand Tinel tapestries, Stag Room, Consistory Hall, Benedict XI’s Cloister and Grand Chapel. Elsewhere in the city interesting sights include the Pont St Benezet, partially destroyed by floods in 1668, that lends its name to the famous song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”, the Petit Palais with paintings by Botticelli and Carpaccio, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Alternatively take time to enjoy Rue des Teinturiers, one of the prettiest streets, and the lively heart of the city, Place D’Horloge. Dinner at leisure. * Day five: After breakfast we depart for Arles and St. Remy, spending the day in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh. Arles is a town with strong Roman associations as well as being where Van Gogh spent some of his most productive time, painting over 300 works in just 15 months. At Van Gogh’s insistence Gauguin joined him in Arles and they painted together for a time. Van Gogh walked in the surrounding countryside and became fascinated by images of olive trees, wheat fields and cypresses, which he introduced into his works. A guide will conduct us around the principal sights of the town which include the Roman Theatre, Constantine’s Baths, the Amphitheatre and the 12th century Romanesque church of St Trophime. The well-preserved Arena offers stunning views of the charming town from its top tier. St-Remy-de-Provence is where Van Gogh also spent some time, at the St-Paul-de-Mausole hospital (where there will be a chance to visit). It is here he produced Wheat fields with Cypress & Ravine. The picturesque town has tree-lined boulevards, fountains and narrow streets, and is also the birthplace of Nostradamus. Farewell dinner, at the Cloitre St Louis Hotel, included this evening. * Day six: Free time in Avignon prior to your return journey to Marseille for your flight to Gatwick.
